  • Spot the early signs of a mental health problem
  • Offer help on a first aid basis
  • Guide someone towards appropriate support
  • Help stop a mental illness from getting worse
  • Help someone recover faster
  • Gain the language of mental health to enable supportive discussion

These courses do not enable you to be a therapist or counsellor, but they do teach you to listen, reassure and respond, even in a crisis – and how to make a difference, potentially preventing the crisis from happening. An added bonus is you learn to look after your own mental health, promote positive wellbeing and are able to raise awareness of mental health issues in people around you. By giving you the tools to have these conversations, you will be able to create a mentally healthy, supportive environment in the university community.
